DONATION IN MEMORY OF HAROLD MILLAR

VERY GENEROUS DONATION IN MEMORY OF HAROLD MILLAR - A LIFELONG ANIMAL LOVER.

Everyone at the MSPCA would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to the family of the Late HAROLD MILLAR, for their very kind and generous donation of €1450 to help support the work of our shelter. Harold's wife Doreen and his daughter Lynn called to the MSPCA shelter on Friday 7th May and presented us with this amazing donation to honour the memory of Harold - a husband and father who had a lifelong love of animals. As you can see from the wonderful photographs, he had lovingly cared for many cats, dogs and rescue hens throughout his life and thoroughly enjoyed looking after them - pictured from left to right, top to bottom are Hollie, Summer (the current furry baby), Billy, Scruffy (his first dog of his own) and Pippa (current stray rescue cat). We would like to say that with the help of this donation - the MSPCA will be able to continue our animal welfare work & help our shelter animals find suitable and loving forever homes.

Thank you again to the wonderful Millar Family for sharing your stories of Harold and for supporting the work of our animal shelter, it was a very kind and touching gesture that we truly appreciate.

"To all the wonderful angels at Monaghan SPCA, In memory of my first rescue dog Lou, who died a week ago (14th Dec), I have donated a 1,000 euros in her memory, through PayPal.  I have her from she was 3 months old, and she would have been 18 this Christmas.  She was a truly special rescue dog, who ended up rescuing me!  I hope her memory lives on by helping other dogs in your care...I adopted Nessa a year ago, the same week, 10th December, now called Neasa (which is pronouced Nassa).  Neasa is another truly beloved companion, guide and protector of mine.  I am truly grateful for her and the work that you do for all the animals in your care.  YOU ARE ALL AMAZING, THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE OF YOU ALL"  Merry Christmas to all the animals, Áine McCaffrey"

PATCHES UPDATE (RE-HOMED 12 YEARS AGO !!)

WE JUST RECEIVED THIS WONDERFUL UPDATE & GREAT PHOTO OF PATCHES (AKA DAISY).  SHE WENT OVER TO DOGS TRUST UK 12 YEARS AGO & ALEX HAS BEEN SO GREAT KEEPING IN TOUCH!  IT IS DEEPLY APPRECIATED ...

Hi Lori, I hope this email has got to you and you remember me. We were the ones who adopted Patches aka Daisy via the dogs Trust after you sent her over to England to them nearly 12 years ago. I was last in touch when we'd moved to Cornwall and adopted another shelter dog. Anyway, I wanted to update you a bit. Daisy is 13 on Friday and still going strong. She does have arthritis in her hips and has lost muscle in her legs but the vet says she's doing well for a dog of her age and size. She is on a daily dose of Metacam now and has been for a couple of months now and it's helped her be less stiff. Saying all that, she still enjoys running around on the beach and in the woods. She has had several lumps removed since I last emailed but she's recovered well bless her. The best thing I have to tell you is that she has almost lost all her fear of things, including people! It's amazing! She actually tentatively goes up to people (even men) on the beach to see if they have treats for her.... which they often have because they are quite often dog walkers themselves. She is so funny, she often gets treats from folk like this!!! I remember you saying you love to hear about dogs you've helped in the past, well thank you for sending her over, we love her so much even if she's not the most cuddly dog ever, she certainly has a massive character and still makes us laugh several times every single day... anyway, our other dog is very cuddly.

SEAN McCAFFREY FOUNDATION DONATES €1,000 FROM GOLF CLASSIC AT ROSSMORE

FOND MEMORIES OF SEAN MCCAFFREY

The Monaghan SPCA would like to thank Irene and the Sean McCaffrey Foundation for their very generous donation of €1,000.  Sinead and Lori had the honour of accepting the cheque at a presentation in Rossmore Golf Club on Saturday, 18th May.

The Foundation & Committee had just organized a very successful two-day golf tournament which was supported by so many sponsors and local businesses. The two days reflected the high esteem in which Sean McCaffrey was held by so many!!

The Monaghan SPCA has such fond memories of Sean and Irene visiting our shelter over the years with loads of bags of treats for the dogs!! Sean always had to meet each dog individually – giving he/she a treat and learning the background as to why this dog ended up into our care/shelter.

Sean’s heartfelt kindness, concern & caring about our rescue animals was special indeed.  We so loved seeing Sean & Irene arrive for a chat and visit.  Their caring and interest gave all of us & our volunteers a moral boost -- knowing that such special people truly appreciated our work (caring for unwanted animals & giving them a second chance of a loving home).

It is wonderful that a Foundation has been created in Sean’s name and honour and his love and kindness will live on -- so many good causes dear to him will benefit from his legacy.  Heartfelt thanks from all at the Monaghan SPCA; and wishing continued success to the Foundation & Committee for your future events for many years!!

Over the course of 5 days, a temporary pop-up shop in Gillander’s Shop on Market St, was a-buzz with folks looking for a special find ... clothes, accessories and other fine things sold for near a song!  Sharon says "We were amazed at everyone's encouragement... many people even came in just to make a donation, this kind of support is nothing short of uplifting."

Sharon's been involved in the Monaghan SPCA since 1993 and Josie, also having a great love for animals, presented her with this idea, as her wardrobe was overstuffed with clothes which she needed to move on to new owners. (Alas, no doubt, to make room for more ... Josie loves her fashion!)

Says Josie: "Myself and my late husband were actively involved in the Monaghan SPCA when we retired to Ireland back in the 80's.  I understand only too well, the hard work involved and the emotional toll it can take.  This charity has come such a long way and deserve to be applauded for saving and caring for animals at their Shelter and all the other rescue they do."  Sharon pops in:  "And importantly, talking to schools and other groups, it's so necessary to educate next generation of animal guardians!"

If you're interested in adopting an animal, reporting neglect, or visiting the Shelter, check out the website:  www.monaghanspca.ie.  Josie n Sharon want to thank everyone wholeheartedly, for all your support - it was lots of fun too!

MSPCA HALLOWEEN DOG WALK THANKS TO TESCO AND NEWELL STORES

We had our walk on Sunday last.  It was a lovely day weather wise and there was a great turn out of people and their dogs who came to walk around Emy Lough and support us.  Many people and the dogs were dressed up in their Hallowe’en outfits.  We raised a total of €948 and £50 and all of this goes to the work of caring for the rescue animals in our shelter.

We, at the MSPCA greatly appreciate the sponsorship from Tesco and Newell Stores in Dungannon. All the walkers were very pleased with the refreshments and eats which they got on their return.

VET BILL HELP APPEAL

Appeal to help pay our current vet bill for 3 dogs that have recently come into our care.

They often say things come along in three’s and that’s certainly what happened in the MSPCA recently when we got three dogs into our shelter all needing veterinary care. The MSPCA very rarely ask the public to help with our costs and only make an appeal if absolutely necessary.  However, the following three dogs were an unforeseen expense that we had not expected.

Ronaldo

This handsome Labrador was hit by a car in Tydavnet area, we took him to the vet clinic where an x-ray showed his back left leg was broken and needed an operation and cast. We named him Ronaldo – he was not microchipped and had no ID tag – his owner has not come forward.  Ronaldo is doing very well and is now in his third week at the vet clinic.
Approx. cost to date is €450 - €500.

Rynee

This lovely little girl #144 (stray) was on the ‘Put to Sleep’ list at the Council Pound.  The MSPCA collected her and took her directly to the vet clinic as we had been advised that she had an injury to her left leg.  Her x-ray showed her injury was serious and required a 4 ½ hour operation to insert a metal plate secured by six screws. We have named her Rynee and she also is doing well but still in vet care.
Rynee’s operation cost is approx. €500

Fabio

Meet Fabio a wonderful Collie who came into our care as a voluntary surrender. He had an injury to his back leg and was dragging his front paw.  After his vet check and x-ray it was discovered Fabio had a breakage in his pelvis which required staying in the vets for over a week and then another four weeks cage rest at the shelter. Thankfully, Fabio is back to good health again and ready for his new home.
Approx. cost:  €200

MICHELLE MCHUGH DONATES GIFT BASKET

GIFT BASKET FROM MICHELLE MCHUGH RECEIVED ON 30TH JUNE 2016
What a fantastic surprise today to receive this absolutely beautiful gift basket & card with a donation from Michelle McHugh (Keegan's Newsagents in Carrickmacross. She also included treats for the humans at the shelter as well! Thanks also to Mr. Ronaghan (Ronaghan's Opticians in Carrickmacross & Monaghan) for delivering this gift basket to the shelter today!
Her lovely card said: Hi Guys, I've just read in the Northern Standard the very sad story of the little puppies found in the river...it breaks my heart. But by "God's" grace they were found... and thankfully there are places like the MSPCA to take them and find their forever homes. Keep up the great work girls. A little donation for MSPCA & a goodie box for puppies and dogs in your care (a little something for you guys too). God Bless, Michelle & Philip, Effie, Bella, Jess, Blue and Gizmo

5 PUPS DUMPED IN RIVER

These pups were found dumped into a river on Monday, 20th June near Derrygorry Forest Park (near the Tyrone border). How anyone could commit this atrocity when there are rescues, local pounds and other means to re-home unwanted pups is beyond words....

A man out walking heard them crying and discovered 4 of them trying to climb up the river bank and the smallest one still in the water. He waded into the river and rescued her and the other 4 babies!! We received a call at 6 pm this evening from a very caring woman who helped him carry them back to her house and she brought them into the shelter this evening. These Collie mix pups are only about 5 weeks old! If it weren’t for Tina and Martin coming to their rescue when they did, these babies surely would not have survived very long in this isolated area. Kudos to Martin and Tina – wonderful and caring people who saved these gorgeous and very healthy puppies.

BLOSSOM IN CHERRY BLOSSOMS! (UPDATE BY ADOPTER)

Blossom in the Cherry Blossoms!

Blossom was dumped at our shelter in a box along with her 3 siblings on the 14 October 2015 at only 6 weeks old.  Blossom’s 3 litter mates were re-homed, but poor Blossom was so timid and scared and was in our care for 6 months before she finally found a couple that would give her a new and wonderful home on the 17 May 2016! This special, caring and kind couple who were willing to give her a new life and also work on her fears and phobias have sent us this wonderful photo and article written by them for us to share.

“Local husband and wife with an already 14 year old dog, rescued 12 years ago, and a cat taken in from the wild have taken Blossom into their heart and their home.  The couple did not see the previous feature in the paper, but called to the MSPCA to have a look at Blossom as they had seen her on the shelter’s website.

As Blossom was not used to life beyond the shelter, her world outside was new and she barked at her reflection in the oven, the noise of the washing machine scared her, and she was even unsure of the clothes drying on the neighbour’s line.  It has been a challenging few weeks but will be worthwhile in the end says new owner.  It is all about patience and time and internet research.  Also with the help of Dog Trainer, Elaine Power (07904649591-NI), Blossom is learning socialization skills and good behaviour.”

Finally on BLOSSOM – she is to me:  Beautiful, Lively, Obedient, Smart, Sweet, Outstanding, Memorable!

Blossoms owner states that “owning a dog is good company, and walking keeps both owner and dog fit.  In my experience, rescue dogs make great pets. Please visit your local shelters if you are looking for a new family canine or feline to welcome into your home and life!”

Advice issued by local council is as follows:  Getting a dog is a long-term commitment involving time and money and researching what breed best suits your lifestyle.  Dogs need yearly vaccinations and worm and flea treatment (every 2-3 months).  Dogs must be microchipped by the vet and a licence obtained from your local council. Microchip details must be kept up to date to ensure your dog is re-united with you if found straying.  Dogs must wear an I.D. tag, be kept under control, not stray or cause a nuisance by excessive barking.  Dog fouling should always be picked up by the owner as not only is it illegal not to do so, in which fines can be imposed, it is smelly, messy and harmful to those who come into contact with it.

MIFIT FUNDRAISING DONATION

MIFIT STUDENTS CHARITY FUNDRAISING

The MSPCA were so delighted to receive €202.15 from the students from MIFIT. The Level 5 (Animal Care) and Level 6 (Animal Science) students raised over €400 on their charity dog grooming day in aid of the MSPCA and Holly's Horse Haven in Co. Louth. They visited the shelter on Thursday, 12 May to present us with a cheque from their fundraiser. The photos includes: Siobhan Murphy, Violet Kennedy, Patrick McCarron, Lauren McCaffery, Paula McGonnelll and Orla Doran (MSPCA). Well done to the MIFIT students for their fundraising to help the rescue animals!!

CHILDRENS' DONATION - JUNE 2016

What a lovely surprise the MSPCA got Sunday past when Mia, Alexa Flynn and Sophie Mallon arrived with a big basket of toys and treats for the dogs and cats in our care, they also brought a beautiful cat bed and large dog bed to help keep our animals cosy. Mia, Sophie and their friend Crania Curran (not present in photo) bought all these gifts from their confirmation money and also gave a donation of € 150. We are overwhelmed with your generosity and on behalf of all our furry friends at the shelter we say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. The Flynn family adopted a wonderful dog called Juno from us several years ago and she is now a much loved family member.
